Keyword Research

In our previous article, we have gathered some brief on keywords and . To be honest there are not fixed rules for keyword research. There are several paid tools available which can help you get keywords very easily. For those, who is not looking for paid tools, need to know basic procedure to select perfect keywords. Let’s have a look at some of the procedures,

1. Brainstorming (Thinking about something)
It is the thinking of target market and keywords related to that market, to set mind that if you are targeting local or global market and competing with local or global competitor. If there is any link with target market’s age, gander, income and so on. If there is a link then how will it affect the desired keyword? Take for example, you have a furniture store in a city then the the keyword can be California Furniture. Again if you have a social media site, suppose like Facebook which doesn’t work in China, you have to take that in account.

You can also ask target customers, sales people, friend and relatives about the word they search or use to search for the correct keyword selection. It’s possible that the technical term you are thinking of might not match with their thoughts. Furthermore, you can visit online forum/ blog sites relating to your target. Why not even visit the website of your competitor, you might actually get some keyword idea from there as well. Note all your ideas before you select the perfect keyword.

2. Keywords can be categorized based on some subjects:
You should set more than one keyword based on your service or product. Often this step can be wrong. Because you won’t know the keywords terms until you, yourself research about the keywords, as you will not know what are the search term other visitors are using. Hence often this step is done earlier for convenience.

3. Research:
You can use keyword research tools for keyword research. First of all you need to choose a category from a seed phrase. If you have a website then you can directly get keywords by entering your desired url in Google keyword research tool.

4. Compile research:
After you have completed the steps above, export your keyword research data in a spreadsheet. You can re-categorize the keywords if you need.

5. Remove non-relevant ones:
While your spreadsheet is created, you can remove non relevant phrases from there. Firstly, remove those keywords which has low search count by checking from the keyword research tool. Be extra careful in this step, talk to your clients even if you have to.

6. Determine Competitiveness:
You have to decide here, if you want a tough competition or an easy one. Every phrase has its own competitiveness. If you choose the one which everyone else is going after than it will be a very hard target to achieve. So you have to choose keywords which has less competition but more visitors.
Talking about competitiveness, keywords can be categorized in 3 types. They are-
-Highly Competitive
-Fairly Competitive

7. Select the right keyword:
After you have completed all the steps above, you will have the perfect keywords for your website. However, make sure to check number of searchers, relevancy to your website (keyword will be relevant with the content of the website) and competitiveness level before you actually use the keywords.

As keyword is the key for SEO hence this is where you should put as much effort possible right from the beginning.
